Title Merrimac Hat Corp. Black Wool Hat

Description Black wool calot or beret style hat made by the Merrimac Hat Corp. On the left side and toward the front of the hat the wool fabric is folded up to create a small brim while the right side of the hat extends down further than on the left. On the lowered right side there are two leaf or petal shaped pieces of wool fabric facing upwards that are attached by a single button below. This is about an inch in diameter made out the the same black wool material; at the center of this button there is a small faux diamond. The inside of the hat has a makers mark stamped into the center which is a circle outline with a curved triangle inside and inside the triangle it reads "Merrimac/ Hat/ Corp." There is also a small tag stitched to the inner band of the hat with the number 22 embroidered on it.

Maker Merrimac Hat Corp.

Maker Details Founded in 1863 as a hat making company in Massachusetts. The Merrimac Hat Company operated two manufacturing plants at opposite ends in the town of Amesbury, Massachusetts. The company sold ladies trimmed hats through commissioned agents in New York direct to retail outlets, but the company eventually established three direct sales subsidiaries. During WWII the Merrimac company made woman’s work caps, mosquito tents, Navy rain coats, and Army sleeping bags. By 1944, Merrimac Hat Corporation was the largest producer of hat bodies and trimmed hats in the United States. The company motto was always “to give maximum value at minimum cost”.
