Title Dr. Shoops Catarrh Perscription

Description [a] Brown cardboard packaging with yellow and red front label. The bottom portion of the front label has been torn off as well as the bottom closure flap. The front label has a portrait of Dr. Shoop within a red colored circle, above the portrait reads "Dr. Shoop's" and below "Catarrh/ Prescription" The top closure flap is also missing and there is a large piece of clear box tap wrapped around the box. One the left side of the box there are directions for use printed in black. On the right side there is a short description of what the product is used for. [b] Wrapped around the glass jar inside the box is a wax paper product statement; on one side there is an image of a box of medicine tipped on its side that is part of an advertisement for Dr. Shoop's Restorative. [c] There is a small glass jar with a yellow label with red accents. On the label is the product's name and a portrait of Dr. Shoop. The jar is full of white ointment and the jar is secured with a chrome metal lid.

Maker Dr. Shoop

Maker Details Dr. Shoop opened a medical practice in 1883 and by 1890 established a line of cure - all patent medicines which were sold door to door by agents. Dr. Shoop’s Family Medicine Co. was incorporated June 30, 1891. The company’s main product was Dr. Shoop’s Restorative “Nerve Tonic” a mixture of Nuxvomica, blood roots, hyrastis, boric acid, alcohol, water and sugar syrup. Other Shoop products were Green Salve, Catarrh Cure, Sarsaparilla, Croup Cure, Cough Cure, Rheumatism Cure, Fever Cure, Worm Cure Syrup, Pain Panacea and Magic Ointment. The company corporate name was changed to Dr. Shoop’s Laboratories Inc. in 1911. The business was listed in the 1925 Racine city directory at 1218-26 Washington Avenue and later left Racine. Today, Dr. Shoop’s building and home are on the National Register of Historic Places and are Racine Landmarks

Summary Fair Condition

Notes The cardboard packaging could be considered in poor condition. A bottom portion of the front of the box has been torn off. The top and bottom flaps are also missing but the internal flaps (left and right) are still intact. There is also a large piece of clear box tape wrapped almost completely around the box. Inside though, the glass jar is in good condition, there is some discoloration of the label but it is fully intact. The metal lid is also in good condition with no rustin. The wax paper advertisment is also in good condition, there is some discoloration but there are no tears.
