Maker Johnston's Milwaukee

Maker Details The company employed more than 1,000 people in the days when chocolate candies were hand-dipped. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, the Milwaukee family company became nationally known for its high-quality boxed chocolates. By the mid-1900s it was also making cookies to sell by the box, and there are stories about how people would drive for miles to buy broken cookies for 25 cents a bag. The Johnston family sold the business for $4 million to Ward Foods in 1969, and the new owners stopped making cookies five years later, but the plant at S. 40th St. and W. National Ave. continued to manufacture candy and other goodies. Pie crusts, fudge toppings, chocolate syrups, cream pies and frozen fruit pies were popular.
