Description Framed black and white print on paper with glass covering and white cardstock backing attached with nails and masking tape.. Frame has been painted black. Print is on white paper with text "John C. Karel" at top. At center is photograph of Karel in oval shape. At bottom is text "Democratic Candidate / For Governor" To left of that text is maker mark. At bottom left is text "Authorized and published by Paul A. Hemmy, 703 Merrill Bldg., / Milwaukee, Wis., for John C. Karel, 1302 Lloyd St. Milwaukee, Wis." At lower right is text "Primary Election Sept. 3, 1912".

Notes Loose in frame using caution when handling. The cardstock backing and frame are not archival; needs attention. Paper is yellowed and stained. On left edge there is staining from liquid. Top 1/2 of paper is discolored. On edges there are pieces of cellophane tape which are very yellowed. At left edge near corner and the upper left corner there is loss of paper. At top edge center there is a pin hole through the paper and the cardstock backing for hanging. Horizontal ripples run across the lenght of poster. Tears along edges. Tear in paper by "J" in John. Frame has minor edgewear with scuff marks. Surface scratches on glass. On back, cardstock is yellowed and stained, possibly stored on top of newsprint. Pieces of masking tape along edges are brittle. On right edge there are areas of loss of paper layer running vertically. On lower left quadrant there is black pen mark. Nails in edges are loose. Green pieces of masking tape at top and bottom edges and along left edge.

Notes John C. Karel was born in 1873 in Nebraska and moved to Wisconsin in 1874. He attended high school in Kewaunee. Karel graduated from the University of Wisconsin Law School. He moved to Milwaukee, WI after that. He was a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly. He ran for Governor of Wisconsin in 1912, but lost to Francis E. McGovern. He ran again in 1914, but lost to Emanuel L. Philipp. In 1916, Karel was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention.
