Place of Origin

Maker Springfield Grocer Company

Maker Details Springfield Grocer Company was founded in 1865 and later incorporated in 1889. It first operated as a partnership under the name of Dyer, Massey and McCann. In the beginning it was more of a dry goods company, selling to farmers, early settlers, and city folk alike. The atmosphere, the merchandise and the customers were products of the time-strictly pioneer. In 1885 new buildings were erected in the 400 block of Boonville and with that Springfield Grocer Company expanded to include groceries as wholesaling took on a bigger role for the organization. Springfield Grocer Company is Springfield’s oldest surviving continuously operating business institution. Laura Ingalls Wilderwrote several of her original manuscripts on Springfield tablets. The company has been in the same family for 4 generations. Today, Springfield Grocer Company serves primarily foodservice and institutional accounts such as restaurants, schools, fast food chains, nursing homes, hospitals and national accounts.
