Provenance

Notes

Date FEB 28,2014

Notes The cigarette cards were made by John Player & Sons, as is indicated on the card itself. However, the backing of the display states W.D. & H.O. Wills, a completely different company. These pieces do not go together. Further reserach is needed.

Date FEB 28,2014

Notes Player & Sons first produced a series of 25 Characters of Dickens cigarette cards in 1912. More were produced in 1914. After evaluating cards from that printing, these are most likely not from that set (http://digitalgallery.nypl.org/nypldigital/dgkeysearchresult.cfm?parent_id=452762). In 1912, the original printing had a light green border. The 1914 set did not have any text on the face. The cards were reprinted in 1923 and again in the 1990s. Most likely these are from 1990, but seeing the back of the cards would determine that.
