Title Bigger Hair Tobacco packet

Description Paper packet of Bigger Hair chew or smoke tobacco. Paper is yellow with black print. Inside packet is silver with blue tax stamp. Images of a black woman with nose/ear rings and afro-style hair are on the front and back. The logo image of a native american with headress is found on the front and back (The American Tobacco Co.). "B. Leidersdorf" is printed in script along the side with corporation info. Manufacturer's info and notices are located on the front and opposite side of script. The product was originally produced as "Nigger Hair" until the 1950s. The production company changed the product's name to "Bigger Hair" in the 1950s, following fierce criticism from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

Maker B. Leidersdorf Company

Maker Details Bernhard Leidersdorf (1837-1912) came to Milwaukee in 1858 and started a tobacco factory in partner-ship with Henry Helmholz. The partnership was dissolved in 1869 and the firm continued as the B. Leidersdorf Company. The company became one of the leading tobacco firms in Milwaukee, and its products were distributed throughout the nation. Leidersdorf retired from active business in 1905. A Republican, he was city alderman (1880-1881) and public debt commissioner of Milwaukee (1905- 1906).

Notes This packet is in excellent condition. Small dents in paper on front and back, but not damaging to the item. Tax stamp is still intact and package is still filled with tobacco (has not been opened). Packet was originally stored in non-archival plastic bag.
