Notes In 1873, James and William Horlick, from Gloucestershire founded the company in Chicago. William was working in Racine, WI at a family quarry, and James joined him. By 1875 they moved to a larger facility in Racine. The malted milk powder was patented in 1883. The product was originally intended as an infant formula, but was adopted by explorers to the North and South Poles in 1909, as well as soilders and athletes. The product was non-perishable and high-calorie. By the 1930s, the drink was claimed to help insomina or "night starvation". http://www.horlicks.co.uk/ http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/museum/exhibits/horlicks/
