Title Armour's Oats

Description A yellow cardboard 1 lb. 4oz. container of Armour's Rolled White Oats. Container's label reads (in blue) "Armour's Rolled White Oats, Cook Perfectly in 10 to 15 Minutes, Manufactured and Guaranteed by the Armour Grain Company Chicago". Also printed on the label are "Tested Recipes for Armour's Oats" including, "Armour's Oatmeal Bread, Armour's Oatmeal Macaroons, Armour's Scotch Tea Cakes". Above the recipes on one side reads "Serve Every Day in Some Appetizing Way These Guaranteed Cereals, Armour's Oats, Armour's Macaroni, Spaghetti, Noodles, Armour's Pancake Flour, Armour's Corn Flakes". Label also includes illustration of an elf dressed in a suit, holdling a stalk of grain.

Maker Armour Grain Company

Maker Details The owner's of the Armour Grain Company also owned the famous Armour & Co. meatpacking plant in Chicago. Armour & Company was an American meatpacking and food processing company founded in Chicago, in 1867, by the Armour brothers, led by Philip Danforth Armour. Armour was the inspiration for one of the meatpacking plant owners in Upton Sinclair's classic novel, The Jungle. The 1904 strike against Armour & Co. figures in the novel's plot.

Notes The label of the container is in fair condition as most of the text can be read and the illustrations are mostly unmarked. However, the containers lid has lost any label possibly once present and the top and bottom of the label have moderate peeling or tearing. The bottom and inside of the container have some stains and taping.
