Description / Abstract This book contains a collection of spelling, dictation/pronunciation, and grammar exercises for the classroom. The book was created by Parker & Watson in the need of Public Schools for a comprehensive text book on the subject.

Physical Description 160 pp. Orange/yellow hardcover with black cloth binding. On the front in black print is a picture of a teacher and students in an ornate frame. Front cover reads "The National Elementary Speller, Parker & Watson." Back cover is printed in black with a thin border surrounding "National Series of Readers and Spellers By Parker & Watson" it then continues to list various books in the series as well as an alternate series for large graded schools. Inside front cover is a stamp for the location of the book's distributor/seller, "T.S. Wright Druggist, Bookseller and Stationer, No. 530 Main St., Fond Du Lac Wis." On page II there is a section "To Teachers" which explains to the owner how to use this book in the classroom. Interestingly from pages 157-160 cover "Foriegn Words and Phrases" in Latin, French, Spanish, and Italian. Book includes a few black and white printed illustrations throughout the book depicting classroom activities. Measurements: 6.75" length/height 4.75" width

Publisher Details New York and Chicago. A.S. Barnes & Co. was a family operation which was created in the mid-1800s by Alfred Smith Barnes; eventually, his five sons, his brother and one nephew were connected to the firm, which became the leading publisher of textbooks in the United States, as well as issuing general interest books on a wide range of subjects. A.S. Barnes published textbooks under the "Library for Teachers" imprint. The company continued publishing until 1982. It is in no way associated with Barnes & Noble.

Notes The book has considerable wear in both the pages and the cover. The book is covered in plastic which may either be a dust cover or something put in place to protect the cover at a later date. Inside the front and back cover are tape/duct taped tears. There is a quarter-sized ink stain on the front cover. The binding is also loose.There is some writing on multiple pages. The pages of the book have yellowed and the edges show considerable wear.
