Title J. & P. Coats Spool Cotton advertisement

Description Framed advertisement for J. & P. Coats Spool Cotton. Frame is wood. Glass piece over paper ad. Ad appears to be on canvas as some netted material is showing.. Ad has "J. & P. Coats." at top. Image is a parade of people. One person holding a banner "J. & P. Coats Spool Cotton". Just above center there is a large spool of thread. Some people have small, black numbers printed on them and at bottom there is a key identifying them. Back has a piece of cardboard as backing for the paper, piece of wood vertically glued on. Electrical tape attaching cardboard and wood to frame. Wire running horizontally attached with eye bolts attached at interior of frame. At top and bottom left corners there are two nails into wood frame.

Maker J & P Coats

Maker Details James and Patrick Clark started working in the thread and loom business in the 1850s in Scotland. In 1806 they transitioned from silk to cotton and developed a way to twist the cotton. The first plant for cotton thread was opened in 1812. In 1952, J & P Coats and the Clark Thread Co. merged.

Notes Paper is under glass, but appears to have small creases throughout. At left edge near top there is water damage. Small brown stains throughout. Tears on edges. Sectons of loss at bottom of the top layer of paper exposing a netted material underneath. On the right leg of the man at left with red & white striped paints at front it appears an area of loss which has been painted over and retouched. At lower left corner there are strips of paper taped with cellophane tape to edge of ad. Glass has small scratches. Just below center at right there is a small black scuff mark on glass. Frame has slight chipping and wear at edges. At lower edges there is cellophane tape stuck on.

Notes The back of frame is worn with scratches. At top edge there is masking tape adhered to wood, also on right edge at top. Some staining around frame. The wood piece attached to cardboard has some cracks near top edge. Wood is worn. The wire attached has some sharp points at left. There is electrical tape attached to wood frame and cardbaord. Tape is coming off at top right corner. On wood frame, at top and bottom left edge there are two nails each in wood. The nails are rusted.
