Description Silver metal sign with black rectangle on front. At center ther eis a vault door embossed in silver and black with text "1st Mortgage Real Estate Bonds" printed on the gate. Text reads "Agency for Chris.Schroeder & Son Co. Milwaukee", "Established 1889" "Denoinations $100 $500 $1000" "First Mortgage Real Estate Bonds". Four holes punhed out along top edge. One hole punched out at lower right. Back is silver and unfinished.

Notes On front, the top left and right corners and lower right corner are curled upward. Light scratching on the metal edges and lettering. Some discoloration and staining on the black paint, with a larger mark to the left of the vault logo. On the back, to the left of center there is a 2" brown stain. On lower edge to left of center there is a 2" brown stain. Light scraching throughout back side. At top left corner there are two small points of discoloration.

Notes Christian Schroeder went into real estate, mortgage loans and insurance in the 1880s with two of his sons, Edward and William, forming Chris. Schroeder & Sons. William died at a young age and Edward left to start his own agency, so a third son, Walter joined. Christian died about 1916, and Walter took over and expanded the business bringing in 2.5 million in income. In 1921, they were the largest real estate mortgage business in Milwaukee.
