Maker Earl & Wilson

Maker Details William S. Earl had his first experience as a manufacturer of collars and cuffs as an employee in the factory of his father in 1848. Two years later he began business for himself and from 1856 to 1858 he was associated with Edwin D. Blanchard, in the manufacture of linen in the Manufacturers Bank building. On January 1, 1867, he and Washington Wilson formed the present firm of Earl & Wilson and began the manufacture of collars and cuffs. The "E. & W" trade mark was not only well known throughout America, but in many foreign countries.

Summary Good

Assessor Samanta Pugh

Notes The exterior wood is in good condition, it does present scratches throughout its surface and some smudges, but no severe damage was inflicted to the wood. Case's interior wood shows more signs of wear. A new wooden panel was placed on top of original wood on the left side portion of the case's interior, and this piece has some damage such as as the beginnings of a crack from top to bottom. Advertisement labels have some dirt smudges, but are in very good condition.Right side wooden edge piece on the front has been replaced by a new piece of a lighter color of wood. A small horizontal wooden panel is missing on space between the two right advertisement windows. Bottom of the case presents a larger amount of scratches on the wood. There are 8 small holes on top of the case where screws would have gone.
